Secured by Design – Hampton Court Show Garden 2018

We are very proud to announce that this year we will be supplying the plants for Lucy Glover and Jaqueline Poll’s (Capel Manor College) first Hampton Court garden.

Secured by Design (SBD) is the title for a group of national police projects focusing on the design and security for new and refurbished homes, commercial premises and car parks as well as the acknowledgement of quality security products and crime prevention projects. It supports the principles of ‘designing out crime’ through physical security and processes, reducing the risk of crime and the fear of crime. The aim is to provide an enjoyable and safe space, which has well protected boundaries, preventing easy access to the rear and protecting everything within. Therefore, Lucy and Jacqueline designed a garden that will have a calming atmosphere with tones of grey in the hard landscaping, a reflection pool and soft relaxed planting including beautiful perennials and grasses. Trees will be columnar and will not allow intruders to climb on them or hide behind them and the bars of the pergola will rotate preventing climbing. The Green screens will provide a sustainable secure fence solution along the boundaries and offer air cleansing properties helping to reduce pollution. Prickly plants and gravel placed close to the house will act as a further deterrent. The Dawn till dusk low voltage lights will ensure visibility in the garden at night. Global stone solar lights will provide additional lightening and sculptural interest throughout the garden. Key within the garden will be the use of recycled wood to construct affordable sustainable features such as the pergola, raised beds and garden furniture With the ethos of the community and sustainability themes of the garden, the wood is from St Albans Wood Recycling, a not for profit social enterprise, and the plants (supplied by us!) will be replanted in a community project in London after the show.

We will be catching up with Lucy and Jacqueline during the planting and when the medals are announced and will be posting tweets and articles during this period. We wish them the very best of luck!
